Proofreading & copy-editing

I offer high-quality proofreading and copy-editing services at fair rates, delivered efficiently, intelligently and with a smile.

Qualifications and experience

Proofreading: I have passed the Society for Editors and Proofreaders‘ (SfEP) Proofreading Progress course and publishers’ proofreading tests (OUP Academic, Taylor & Francis, Boydell & Brewer, Palgrave MacMillan, UCL Press, Hodder Education).

Editing: I have passed the Society for Editors and Proofreaders‘ (SfEP) Copy-editing Progress course as well as publishers’ tests (e.g. Boydell & Brewer, UCL Press). I love editing academic works and have edited both shorter publications and multi-author volumes; this is in addition to a wide range of documents and websites I have worked on in my previous life as a policy officer for over fifteen years and academic for eleven years.

I have also taken a course on substantive editing / rewriting with the Oxfordshire Publishing Group.

Project management: I hold a current Prince2 qualification at practitioner level.

Areas of expertise

My main focus is on non-fiction publications in humanities from Classics to European history, theology, literature and art. This can be anything from an academic work to a leaflet or website for a museum, church or other site. My language skills can be handy, from German, Latin, Ancient Greek, Italian and French to a little Old and Middle English too!

I also have expertise in public policy, charities, co-operative and social enterprise, so welcome enquiries in these areas – particularly in relation to climate change, social justice and empowerment. Just get in touch, whether it is a small job or a larger project.

Find out more

I am happy to work on screen or on paper, depending on your needs. I can use the British Standards Institution’s (BSI) proof-correction marks or built-in tools in programs such as Word, Adobe Acrobat Reader or PDF-Xchange.

As with my translation services, I aim to charge a fair rate, so am open to negotiation depending on the project and the level of work required, while taking into account the minimum rates suggested by the SfEP. I can offer an introductory rate to new clients for the first project.

I aim to follow best practice as set out by the SfEP, as an intermediate level member, and was the lead co-ordinator of its Oxford group for just over a year from late 2015 to 2016.
